Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Blackhawks announced late Monday that forward Patrick Sharp underwent an emergency appendectomy and will miss the next 3-to-4 weeks. The 29-year-old center finished last season with 34 goals and a career-best 71 points in 74 games with the Blackhawks. Chicago begins its preseason slate on September 20, and starts the 2011-12 regular season on October 7 in Dallas.

The younger brother of Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews had 20 goals and 28 assists last season for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. The 21-year-old was originally selected by the Islanders in the third round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Segal, 28, spent last season with the Dallas Stars and posted five goals and five assists in 46 games. He also totaled 41 penalty minutes and 90 hits. In parts of three NHL seasons with Tampa Bay, Los Angeles and Dallas, Segal has tallied 11 goals and 22 points in 92 games, with 79 penalty minutes.
